On Wednesday, May 20th, I played a round at the La Vie est Belle Country Club Old Course in Chuncheon, Gangwon-do. Due to the rain starting from the morning, I seriously considered canceling right up until tee time. However, realizing that giving up a highly coveted tee time at such a prestigious course would be the worst possible choice for a golfer, we proceeded with the round. That decision turned out to be absolutely correct. True to its name, which means "Life is beautiful" in French, the course truly showed its real value in the rain.

The most prominent feature of this course, the traditional Hanok clubhouse, is magnificent on clear days, but on a rainy day, the sound of rain falling off the tiled roofs combined with the mist rising over the course creates an overwhelming atmosphere, making you feel as if you've stepped into a traditional ink wash painting.

Despite the rain, the course conditions were phenomenal. The posted green speed for the day was 2.9 meters. Typically, during a rainstorm, greens absorb water and the speed drops drastically. Although it felt slightly slower than a dry 2.9, the ball did not skid or skip; it maintained a very clean roll and took the breaks honestly. This is solid proof that the sub-surface drainage system and the density management of the turf are maintained at a professional tour tournament level.

From the perspective of a teaching professional and course analyst, my advice for tackling the Old Course is to avoid the worst possible choice: aggressively aiming directly at the pins. While the fairways may seem wide, there are a staggering 126 bunkers lurking throughout the course, and the rough is covered with tall fescue grass that is extremely difficult to escape from. Especially around the signature 15th terraced paddy hole, it is easy to lose focus due to the visual beauty. The only way to protect your score is to enjoy the stunning scenery while strictly adhering to course management, playing rationally to bypass the bunkers and deep rough.
