In particular, Bear Creek Chuncheon is counted as a masterpiece where world-renowned course designer Jun-taek No and other architects participated to minimize natural damage and maximize the beauty of mountainous terrain. Consistently ranking at the top of South Korea's Top 10 Public Courses selected by the Korea Turfgrass Research Institute and golf specialized media, this place possesses a reputation that overwhelms most expensive private courses in terms of operation and maintenance, despite being a public course. Having recently experienced Jack Nicklaus CC in Songdo, a top-tier private course in Korea, I stood on the teeing ground with an excited heart to compare how the turf condition and course completeness of Bear Creek Chuncheon, which uses the same Bentgrass fairways, would compete against a prestigious private club.

Bentgrass, a cool-season turf called the yardstick of golf course management, stays green throughout the four seasons and provides the best shot feeling like stepping on a western carpet, but it is a turf that requires tremendous cost and manpower due to its vulnerability to heat and difficult maintenance. The fairways experienced directly at Bear Creek Chuncheon showed excellent density and manicured conditions that were not inferior even when compared to prestigious private courses. Due to the nature of a public course used by an unspecified number of golfers, divot marks were somewhat more noticeable on the fairways, but this was a natural phenomenon depending on the number of users rather than a flaw in the course itself. Rather, seeing the traces of immediate topdressing work where divots occurred, it was clearly confirmed that they operate a thorough management system comparable to private clubs.

The course layout takes on a precise configuration that asks clear questions to the golfer on every hole. Rather than a driver shot that simply goes far, it is a strategic structure where one must precisely place the tee shot in the optimal landing zone that is best for attacking the second shot. The peak of the round on this day was undoubtedly the green performance. The announced green speed was 2.9 meters, which was not very fast, but the actual perceived roll was more than that. Unlike the greens of Jack Nicklaus CC, which left a bit of regret due to recent aeration traces, the greens here were mowed smoothly and cleanly to the extent that no sand or blemishes could be found.
