대한골프협회(KGA) 공식 코스 레이팅을 획득하며 매년 대한민국 아마추어 골프의 최고 권위 대회인 벤제프 클럽챔피언십을 개최하는 천룡CC는 충북 진천에 위치한 대표적인 명문 회원제 골프장입니다. 청룡, 흑룡, 황룡의 3개 코스로 이루어진 27홀 규모의 이 구장은 수려한 조경과 높은 코스 변별력으로 골퍼들 사이에서 명성이 자자합니다. 특히 많은 명문 구장들이 채택하고 있는 시스템처럼 예약 시점에 코스를 미리 지정할 수 없고, 당일 코스 회전율과 잔디 컨디션에 따라 무작위로 배정되는 독특한 운영 방식을 고수하고 있습니다. 이는 27홀 전체를 상시 완벽한 대회 등급으로 유지하고 있다는 구장 측의 강력한 자부심을 보여주는 대목입니다. 이번 라운드는 대회의 주 무대인 청룡 코스를 비껴가 흑룡과 황룡 코스 조합으로 배정받아 진행되었습니다.

이날 라운드에서 가장 까다로웠던 부분은 단연 그린이었습니다. 스타트하우스에 고지된 공식 그린 스피드는 2.9미터로 아마추어들이 가장 선호하는 쾌적한 빠르기였으나, 실제 필드에서의 체감 난이도는 완전히 달랐습니다. 최근 그린의 밀도와 면을 다지기 위해 대대적인 배토 작업(모래 뿌리기)과 롤링 작업을 진행한 여파가 그대로 남아 있었기 때문입니다. 미세한 모래 입자가 그린 표면을 덮고 있는 상태에서는 공이 구르는 마지막 단계에서 홀컵 주변의 브레이크가 일정하게 걸리지 않고 불규칙하게 미끄러지는 현상이 자주 발생합니다. 또한 공이 미세하게 튀기 때문에 런의 발생량을 예측하기 어려워, 평소보다 한 차원 높은 정교한 스핀 컨트롤과 정확한 볼 스트라이킹이 스코어를 지키는 절대적인 열쇠였습니다.

반면 페어웨이 상태는 관리의 대명사다운 명성에 걸맞게 흠잡을 데 없이 압도적이었습니다. 다만 최근 잭니클라우스CC나 베어크리크 춘천 등 양잔디(벤트그라스) 기반의 코스에서 주로 플레이를 해오다가, 오랜만에 한국형 잔디인 조선잔디(중지)를 마주하니 클럽 헤드에 전달되는 타구감과 손맛이 완전히 달라 초반 몇 개 홀에서 거리감을 맞추는 데 꽤나 애를 먹었습니다. 골프학계의 잔디 특성 연구 자료에 따르면 잎이 부드러운 벤트그라스는 공이 잔디 속에 살짝 가라앉는 성향이 있는 반면, 잎이 넓고 빳빳한 조선잔디는 잔디 자체의 지탱하는 힘이 강해 공이 잔디 위에 완전히 떠 있는 형태를 취하게 됩니다.

이러한 구조적 차이 때문에 벤트그라스에서 플레이하듯 가파른 각도로 다운블로 샷을 구사하면, 공의 아랫부분을 때리는 이른바 뽕샷성 미스나 헤드가 잔디에 강하게 걸려 비거리 손실을 보기 쉽습니다. 따라서 조선잔디 페어웨이에서는 과도한 디봇을 내려고 하기보다는 완만한 스윙 궤도로 공만 깨끗하게 걷어내는 쓸어치기 형태의 빗겨치기 메커니즘을 적용해야 미스 샷을 확실하게 방지할 수 있습니다. 또한 조선잔디는 결의 방향에 따른 저항 차이가 양잔디보다 훨씬 심하므로, 어프로치 샷을 할 때는 반드시 순결과 역결을 확인하고 평소보다 살짝 부드러운 템포로 임팩트 순간을 지나가는 것이 천룡CC와 같은 명문 조선잔디 구장을 정복하는 최고의 비결입니다.

천룡CC는 벤제프 대회 개최지다운 훌륭한 페어웨이를 자랑하지만 배토 작업 직후의 까다로운 2.9미터 그린 스피드 속에서 정교한 스핀 컨트롤이 요구되었으며, 벤트그라스와 달리 공이 떠 있는 조선잔디의 특성을 파악하여 완만하게 걷어 치는 샷 매니지먼트가 필수적인 코스입니다.

 

A Round of Strategic Management on Korean Turf, Cheonryong CC Black and Yellow Dragon Course Review

Cheonryong Country Club, well-known as the venue for the Benjefe Club Championship, the highest authority amateur golf tournament in South Korea, is a prestigious private golf club nestled in the beautiful nature of Jincheon, Chungcheongbuk-do. It boasts a sophisticated course setup and a highly selective layout, having acquired the official course rating from the Korea Golf Association (KGA), and consists of a total of 27 holes across three courses: Blue, Black, and Yellow Dragon. Although the Benjefe tournament is mainly held on the Blue and Black Dragon courses, Cheonryong CC operates a unique system where specific courses cannot be designated at the time of reservation but are randomly assigned based on the weather or course rotation conditions on the day. This assignment method is also a source of pride unique to top-tier courses that can only be possible when all 27 holes are consistently maintained in top condition. This round unfortunately bypassed the main stage of the tournament, the Blue Dragon course, and proceeded with a combination of the Black and Yellow Dragon courses.

The official green speed announced on the day of the round was 2.9 meters, a comfortable speed that amateur golfers prefer the most. However, the actual play on the greens was much more challenging than expected. This was because the aftermath of topdressing work (sand spreading) and rolling work, carried out by the course management team recently to increase the density and firmness of the greens, remained entirely intact. Because fine sand particles covered the green surface, the break around the hole cup did not engage consistently and often skidded irregularly at the final stage of the ball's roll. In particular, as the ball bounced subtly due to the sand, predicting the amount of run became difficult, making precise spin control and accurate impact key factors in protecting the score compared to usual.

On the other hand, the fairway condition was impeccably excellent, fitting the name of a prestigious private club. However, having recently played mainly on courses based on Western turf (Bentgrass) such as Jack Nicklaus CC or Bear Creek Chuncheon, facing Korean turf (Zoysia grass) after a long time presented completely different feel and impact transmitted to the club head, causing quite a bit of trouble in the early holes. According to turf characteristics research in golf science, Bentgrass, which has thin and soft leaves, tends to let the ball sink slightly into the grass, requiring a precise down-blown shot for a clean impact. On the other hand, Zoysia grass, which has wide and stiff leaves, has a strong supporting force from the grass itself, causing the ball to sit completely on top of the turf.

Because of this structural difference in turf, if one tries to steeply hit down with an excessive down-blow as if playing on Bentgrass, it is easy to make a miss shot hitting the lower part of the ball or experience a loss in distance due to the club head getting caught in the grass. On a Zoysia grass fairway, as the ball is in a state of sitting slightly in the air, rather than trying to make an excessive divot, a sweeping mechanism that cleanly scoops only the ball with a gentle swing trajectory is much more advantageous. Also, because Zoysia grass has a grain direction (with or against the grain) that creates a more severe resistance difference than Western turf, when making approach shots, one must check the grain of the grass and pass the moment of impact with a slightly softer rhythm than usual to avoid miss shots. Quickly understanding and adapting to these turf characteristics is the best secret to conquering prestigious Zoysia grass courses like Cheonryong CC.
